Paddle Trail Status - Bend Paddle Trail Alliance - Deschutes River Paddle Trail and Whitewater Park

The development of the Paddle Trail Committee was initiated in late 2005 and continues to be very active today.

The scope of the paddle trail was defined to include all of the Deschutes River within Deschutes Country, several stretches of the Little Deschutes River, and nine of the high Cascades Lakes including Hosmer Lake, Wickiup Reservoir, Crane Prairie Reservoir, Paulina Lake, East Lake, Cultus Lake, Sparks Lake, Lava Lake, and Elk Lake.

After defining the scope of the paddle trail the committee has turned its attention to submiting a grant proposal to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Recreational Trails Program. The proposal was for funding the preparation and publication of a comprehensive guide for paddlers on the rivers and lakes of Deschutes County. The grant has been received and the guide is being published Spring 2008. The guide will show suitable water levels for paddling, the put-ins, take-outs, portages, hazards, parking, toilet facilities, points of interest, camping sites and safety and environmental issues.

The committee has conducted surveys of the put-ins and take-outs for signage and adequacy of parking and toilet facilities.  The portages have been surveyed and the hazards on the rivers have been identified.  Since gaining funding for map development, a comprehensive guide is being published and will available in the spring of 2008.
