Bend Paddle Trail Alliance - Creating the Deschutes Paddle Trail and Whitewater Park in Bend Oregon
       “It Can Happen”

We thank these organizations for their support

The Deschutes River is a majestic water resource that provides recreation opportunity and extraordinary scenic value to those of us who live (and visit) Central Oregon. The BPTA is committed to enhancing the Deschutes River's recreational amenities while fostering stewardship and safety for all river users.

Most people think of a trail as one that is "terra firma" but the water trail were advocating entails much more. Envisioned in early 2005, our paddle trail is water-bound, allows clear boat passage wherever possible, and parallels the scenic Deschutes Walking Trail through the City of Bend. Similar paddle trails throughout the United States have increased convenient access to rivers, and with federal, state and local funding - in addition to private and non-profit contributions, communities all across the nation are developing new paddle trails on local rivers.

Over 30 US cities and towns have such paddle trails and destination paddle parks in their downtowns, elevating many of them like Vail, Salida, Boulder, Steamboat Springs and Santa Fe, to premier paddling destinations. This increased access to streams has spurred a phenomenal wave of interest in paddling, and paddle sports in recent years have seen a tremendous upwelling.

Whitewater Kayaking has also seen tremendous growth and was the fastest growing Olympic venue at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Constructing a destination "park and play" whitewater spot on the Deschutes River that offers whitewater recreation within the City limits of Bend is exciting. This park-like area would be part of the larger Deschutes Paddle Trail, and is offered as "something for everyone". Such a venue creates a place for paddlers of all craft and abilities to improve their skills in a safe environment close to home while also attracting visiting paddlers, enhancing tourism for the City of Bend, and minimizing human impact upon the River.

Bend is not new to the recreation scene. With world-renowned rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing, snow boarding, hiking, golfing, and fishing nearby, the addition of a paddle trail secures our top position as one of the premiere outdoor recreation destinations within the county. Bend continues to attract singles, families, and retirees alike who are looking for active, healthy lifestyles in a beautiful mountain setting, and the Paddle Trail dramatically enhances their experience.

With your support, IT WILL HAPPEN.
